Secularism is a theory whereby the state is neutral about religion and there is separation between religious and state organizations. Secularism involves religion having less influence on society as that society modernizes. This is what is happening in modern Thailand with Buddhism. Seen from the outside, more than 94% of Thai people are Buddhist. However, when examined up close, the number of Thai people regularly attending Buddhist activities is decreasing, along with the number of registered Buddhists. In the midst of this social change, the Thai government is implementing a variety of policies and activities that support Buddhist education on the basis of the 2017 Constitution, to revive Buddhism as it played a critical role in Thai religious society throughout the nation’s history. However, caution is needed so that government support for Buddhist education does not lead to the marginalization of other religions, whether intentional or not.
