This paper was written to examine how King Jeongjo’s education policy affected the Yeongnam nobleman, through the activities of Ryu Yi-jwa, who was selected as a member of the Kyujanggak Chogye Munshin during the reign of King Jeongjo. In the 1790s, King Jeongjo took note of the Namin’s power living in Yeongnam area and concentrated on selecting them. Ryu Yi-jwa, a member of Yeongnam nobleman, was selected for the Chogye Munshin and acted in the center of the country with the backing of King Jeongo and Chae Je-gong, the head of Namin group. Ryu Yi-jwa learned the Confucian scriptures and cultivated his writing skills while taking the course of education for the Chogye Munshin, participated in national events and wrote poems in response to King Jeongjo’s poems. He also participated in a compilation project organized by Kyujanggak and was granted a newly published book. Ryu Yi-jwa served as a Kyujanggak Chogye Munshin, and developed his skills as a scholar and official. Ryu Yi-jwa respected the doctrines of Zhu Xi and strongly supported the theory of Toegye Lee Hwang while discussing Confucianism with King Jeongjo. Although King Jeongjo also recognized the doctrines of Zhu Xi and Toegye Lee Hwang, Ryu respected the theory more than the king did. Ryu Yi-jwa suggested a governing plan to King Jeongjo, some of which were realized. Ryu Yi-jwa was wary of King Jeongjo’s excessive concentration on academic research and book compilation, and asked him to strongly discipline the corrupt official. He also proposed plans to foster Hwaseong and to correct the problems of Jolyeong area. His plans were accepted by King Jeongjo. Ryu Yi-jwa was selected for Chogye Munshin according to Jeongjo’s intentions, and was a member of the Yeongnam nobleman who grew up as a person who would practice the reform politics of King Jeongjo.
