The purpose of the study is to explore whether mobile-based activities can improve oral performance of Korean EFL university students. There were 57 participants who were divided into two groups: a control (traditional) group and an experimental (voice-chatting) group. Both groups performed the same speaking activities with or without using a mobile application. That is, participants of the traditional group carried out the face-to-face speaking activities with their partners, whereas participants of the experimental group used mobile phones to interact with each other. Both groups took a pre- and a post-test which were based on TOEIC speaking tasks. The findings of the post-tests within each group were positive for both groups. In other words, speaking performance of both groups statistically improved. However, regarding the usage of technology, there were no statistical differences between the two groups. Also, a pre- and a post-survey were conducted to investigate students’ attitudes toward learning English and the participants were asked to respond to a questionnaire to examine their perspectives on using a mobile tool. There were mixed results of the surveys. Pedagogical implications and future research suggestions are provided.
