Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of 8-weeks of high intensity interval training on exercise performance, blood lipid factors, and autonomic nervous system changes according to environmental temperature differences.
Method: The subjects were healthy men living in city S. After fully describing the purpose and method of this study, participants (N=24) who voluntarily expressed their intention to participate in this study were selected. They were grouped into a normal temperature HIIT group (NHG) and a high temperature HIIT group (HHG). The temperature of NHG was set at 21.0±1.0℃ and HHG at0 4.0±1.0℃. In addition, the humidity in the exercise environment was set equally at 50.0±3.0%. Intensive interval training was applied in different environments for 8 weeks. Exercise performance (VO2max), blood lipids (TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, GLU, TG), and autonomic nervous system responses (HRmax, HRR 5,10,15min) were measured and used in this study. All statistics were analyzed via SPSS ver 24.0, and paired t-tests were used to verify the differences between before and after training. Repeated measure ANOVA was performed to examine the effects between groups and time periods. All statistical significance levels were set at p <.05.
Results: The results of this study are as follows. 1) For blood lipids, LDL-C, GLU, and TG showed significant differences between training, significant effects between time periods, and significant differences between groups (p<.05, p<.01, p<.001). 2) There were no significant differences in each variable in case of exercise ability and autonomic nervous system reaction.
Conclusion: In conclusion, high intensity interval training can be expected to have a positive effect on blood lipids, and create more positive changes in a high temperature environment. There were no statistically significant differences in exercise ability or autonomic nervous system changes, but it showed a positive effect on average. It may be helpful to apply in more detailed and long term training.
