The spread of English in this global world is simply not a big issue since more and more people in the world are using English as an international lanauge or want to learn English for various purposes. This exploratory study aims to discover college students’ attitudes toward world Englishes (WE) and how their attitudes impact their actual understanding of different varieties of English in the world. The questionnaire and the verbal guise test were carried out on a sample of 386 students from a university in Korea. The results from this research inform L2 educators and researchers that the attitudes of Korean college students toward WE affect the comfortability and comprehensibility of English and their preferences of American/British English in English language education. In addition, students’ preferences for American pronunciation appeared to be a preference for familiar English, suggesting more exposure to various English pronunciations is necessary. Based on the findings in this study, the implications for language education are also discussed.
