The Han River estuary is adjacent to Ganghwa-gun in Paju, Goyang, Gimpo, Incheon in Gyeonggi-do, and has the characteristics of Gi-su, where freshwater and seawater meet, so it has a combination of freshwater ecosystems and marine ecosystems, which are rich in biodiversity. In addition, the Han River estuary was a major route for shipping routes that used to travel between the West Sea and Hanyang (Seoul) in the past, and it was a key area of operation for the central part of the Korean Peninsula until railways and roads emerged as alternative means of transportation.
The purpose of this study was to draw up and present major tasks on inter-Korean joint tourism development as a study for the revitalization of tourism in the Han River estuary. This study first analyzed and reviewed the geographical characteristics and values of the Han River estuary, and looked at existing agreements and discussions on the joint use of the Han River estuary. Therefore, based on the above analysis and review, this study derived the basic direction and idea of restoration and utilization for the revitalization of tourism in the Han River estuary area from ecological tourism, leisure tourism, transportation and logistics, economy and industry, and presented major tourism policies in the Han River estuary area. He also wanted to suggest ways of cooperation between the two Koreas on the establishment of governance and tourism development in the Han River estuary among the Korean local governments interested in promoting inter-Korean tourism in the Han River estuary.
