It is well known that, in Plato’s Parmenides, Socrates develops the theory of Forms and Parmenides criticizes it. Parmenides asks Socrates whether the sensible things participate in a Form as a whole or in the parts of it. According to Parmenides, if a Form as a whole presents in many things at the same time, it will be separated from itself. Socrates tries to escape from Parmenides’ criticism by answering that the Form is like a day (hēmera) which presents in many places at the same time. In the same manner, the Form as a whole, far from being separated from itself, can be in many sensible things at the same time. Parmenides does neither examine nor refute Socrates’ answers. Rather, he suggests another analogy according to which the Form is like a big sail (histion) which can spread over many things. Socrates reluctantly accepts Parmenides’ suggestion. But by using the sail analogy, Parmenides reveals that there are some fatal problems in the participation between Forms and sensible things. This paper focuses on some problems derived from those two analogies (day and sail): the philosophical background of those analogies; their likeness and difference; the reason why Socrates abandons his own analogy and accepts that of Parmenides’.’ In doing so, we can make clear the philosophical significance of the participation between intelligible Forms and sensible things.
