Rebutted in this article is a prior determination (or estimation, based upon the style of letters carved on the surface of the monument) of the era during which the Cheongju Uncheon-dong Historical Monument of Temple was supposedly erected. Also included here is a new translation which would hopefully shed some light on really when it was erected and why.
This monument had earlier been considered as an important evidence to the existence of a specific historical notion (“All Three Hans are one [三韓一統意識]”) that presumably prevailed in 7th century Shilla. Yet it was recently confirmed that the monument was actually erected during the Goryeo period. Then, based upon the letter styles (which were argued to be including old Shilla and early Dang styles) a counter-argument resurfaced, claiming the monument was indeed erected in the 7th century as earlier believed. However, considering the fact that such styles were also used in early Goryeo days, the letter styles themselves should not be considered as a solid basis for such argument. Also, no other instances of erecting a monument have been found in periods earlier than the ending years of Shilla.
References to the Sugong(壽拱) Era’s second year document the foundation of the monastery itself, and the epitaph on the monument is about the monastery’s renovation, so they are as well far from being usable facts to support the “Erected in the 7th century” argument. The spacial perspective revealed in the epitaph also matches that of the Goryeo people, which viewed Goryeo as a center of its own universe, placed on the east side of China(“Haedong Cheon’ha, 海東天下”).
Meanwhile, the new translation also indicates this monument’s other nature as a Buddhist pagoda(僧塔). Buddhist pagodas only emerged at the end of the Shilla period. The king who sponsored the project seems to be “So(昭),” who was Goryeo’s 4th king Gwangjong(光宗). That puts the monument’s construction at some point during king Gwangjong’s reign. It seems that Gwangjong supported this project because Chungju was the home region of his mother’s house.
