The picture book First, Second, published by D. Kharms and V. Tatlin in 1929, holds historical value as a picture book created by a representative writer and an artist of Avant-garde. Kharms had no choice but to join in children"s literature in the face of threats to livelihoods due to the censorship and surveillance of adult literature. Nevertheless, Kharms’s talent in adult literature was easily transferred to children"s literature. In Tatlin’s case, it is not known precisely why Tatlin participated in illustrations of Kharms’ picture books who was 20 years younger. It was not impossible because Tatlin and Kharms shared a familiar acquaintance and friends.
First, Second is an exemplary texts that showcase intertextuality and intermediality. Kharms wrote the story in a similar way to his adult work, using the traditional Russian genres such as ‘skazka’ and ‘Schitalka’ to make them easy and familiar for children. Tatlin is well known as the mater of ‘constructivism’, which is a departure from canvas-based painting. Tatlin, who did little work for illustration, accurately conveys Khams" story, showing the tendency of Larionov"s ‘Neo-primitivism’, which he was previously influenced in. The combination of Kharms and Tatlin"s writings and pictures creates a richness of meaning through complementary work, verbal sign, and icon sign.
