“Pyeongan” is a new japonica rice cultivar developed from the cross between Iksan438 and HR15003-69-B-3 at
National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station(NHAES), RDA, in 2003. This cultivar has a medium-late maturity, erect plant
type, resistance to lodging, medium-large grain and about 123 days' growth duration from transplanting to harvesting under Korean
climatic conditions. The milled kernels of Pyeongan are translucent with non-glutinous endosperm. It has about 18.6% of amylose
content, 6.1% of protein content which is much lower than that of Nampyeong and better palatability of cooked rice compared
with Nampyeong. This cultivar shows highly resistant reactions to the bacterial blight pathogen race K1~3, blast and stripe virus,
respectively. The milled rice yield of Pyeongan is about 5.70 MT/ha, which is 11% higher than that of Dongjinbyeo, under the
standard fertilizer level of the ordinary transplanting cultivation and is about 5.46 and 5.26 MT/ha under wet and dry direct seeding
cultivation, respectively. Pyeongan would be adaptable for direct seeding and transplanting in the southern plain area of Korea.
