“Hoanbyeo” is a new japonica rice cultivar developed from a cross between Kanto149 and Milyang95 by the rice breeding team of National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station (NHAES), RDA, during 1990 to 1998. This cultivar requires about 121days of growth duration from transplanting to harvesting under Korean climatic conditions. It is resistant to lodging due to its lower plant height, contributing high adaptability for direct-seeded cultivation. Milled kernels of “Hoanbyeo” are translucent with non-glutinous endosperm. Its roundish grains contains about 19.4% of amylose. Similar palatability of cooked rice to Dongjinbyeo was observed in panel test. This cultivar showed moderate resistance to leaf blast and resistance to stripe virus. The yield potential of Hoanbyeo is about 5.39 MT/ha in milled rice on the standard fertilizer level at transplanting conditions and 5.41 MT/ha at the direct seeding condition in the southern plain area of Korea. “Hoanbyeo” would be adaptable to ordinary transplanting cultivation as well as direct seeding cultivation in the southern plain area of Korea.
