A new soybean variety “Jangwon” was released by the National Crop Experiment Station, RDA, in 2000. This variety was derived from the crossing between Pokwangkong and SS84040, the elite breeding line with large seed, in the summer season, 1989. The breeding line, SS89001-12-3-2, was selected and evaluated in yield trials from 1995 to 1997 at the National Crop Experiment Station, Suwon. Regional yield trial for this line, designated as Suwon198, was performed from 1998 to 2000 at seven locations. Jangwon has a determinate growth habit, purple flower color, grey pubescence, yellow testa, and yellow hilum color. The leaflet shape of this variety is lanceolate, and plant height is higher than Mallikong. It is moderate resistant to soybean mosaic virus (SMV) and resistant to the most troublesome soybean diseases. Jangwon has large seed size (28.5 g per 100 seeds) and texture and chemical composition to be suitable for the raw materials of fermented soyfood and tofu. The average yield in the regional yield trials on seven locations was 2.39 ton/ha, which was higher by 4% than check variety, Mallikong.
