A new soybean variety Geomjeongkong 3 was released by the National Crop Experiment Station, RDA, in 2001.This variety was derived from the cros between Shinano-kuro and SNU78010, the elite breding line with large seed, in the sum-mer season, 1990. The breeding line, SS90312-1-4-2, was selected and evaluated in yield trials from 1997 to 1998 at the NationalCrop Experiment Station, Suwon. Regional yield trials for this line, designated as Suwon 207, were performed from 1999 to 2001at seven locations. Geomjeongkong 3 has a determinate growth habit, purple flower color, tawny pubescence, black testa, andblack hilum color. The leaflet shape of this variety is lanceolate, and plant height is shorter than Geomjeongkong 1. It is resistant tosoybean mosaic virus (SMV) which is one of the most troublesome soybean diseases in Korea. Geomjeongkong 3 has large seedsize (31.0 g per 100 seeds) and texture and chemical composition to be suitable for the raw material of cooking with rice. Theaverage yield in the regional yield trials carried out at seven locations for three years was 2.23 ton/ha, which was similar to checkvariety.
