A new malting barley cultivar, “Sinho”, with a resistant gene (rym5) to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) was developed by the barley breeding team of National Crop Experiment Station (NCES), RDA in 1999. This cultivar was derived from the cross between Misato Golden and Azuma Golden. The incidence of BaYMV disease has increased recently and this disease has become one of the most serious ones for malting barley cultivars in Korea. “Sinho” was resistant to BaYMV in the infested fields in Milyang, Jinju and Naju. However it was susceptible in Iksan where different biotypes of BaYMV and barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV) were infested. The biotypes of these viruses in Iksan were different from those in the above three regions. This newly realeased cultivar, “Sinho”, is the first malting barley developed in Korea for BaYMV resistance. “Sinho” is two-rowed and spring type. The average culm length of “Sinho” was 14 cm taller than that of “Jinyangbori” in the regional adaptation yield trials (RYT). But its strong straw made more resistance to lodging than “Jinyangbori”. Heading and maturing date of “Sinho” were similar to those of “Jinyangbori”. Its yield was comparable to leading cultivar, “Jinyangbori”, in uncontaminated condition. However, its yield was up to 13% more than that of “Jinyangbori” in a infested field. “Sinho” has similar malting quality to “Jinyangbori”.
