Cartilage tissue enginering has emerged as analternative aproach for reconstruction or repair of injuredin a three-dimensional environment to fabricate a newcartilaginous tissue with the application of tisue engineringstrategies based on biodegradable PLGA microspheres.Chondrocytes were seeded on PLGA microspheres and culturedon a rocking platform for 5 weeks. The PLGA microspheresprovided more surface area to adhere chondrocytes comparedwith PLGA sponge scaffolds. The novel system facilitateduniform distribution of the cells on the whole of the PLGAmicrospheres, thus forming a new cartilaginous construct at 4analyses verified that the number of chondrocytes and theamount of extracellular matrix components such as proteoglycansand type II collagen were significantly greater on the PLGAmicrospheres constructs as compared with those on the PLGAsponge scafolds. Therefore, PLGA microspheres enhanced thefunction of chondrocytes compared with PLGA sponge scaffolds,and thus might be useful for formation of cartilage tissuein vitro.
