Gentisyl alcohol isolated from Penicillium sp.has an antioxidative activity, protecting cells from oxidativein vitro angiogenesis assays with bovineaortic endothelial cells (BAECs), gentisyl alcohol was newlyidentified as a pro-angiogenic small molecule that inducesnew blood vesel formation of the cells. Gentisyl alcoholstimulated the proliferation of BAECs in a dose-dependentmanner. Moreover, it induced in vitro angiogenesis of BAECsendothelial cels. Effects of gentisyl alcohol on invasion andtube formation were also dose-dependent. These resultsdemonstrate that gentisyl alcohol could affect the angiogenicphenotypes of endothelial cells and be developed as a newsmall molecule with pro-angiogenic activity.
