This study has been conducted based on Korean grammar study by Japanese and Korean textbooks for Japanese learner in the period from 1880s to 1945. Japan accepted the Western civilization earlier than Korea. First Korean language study was influenced by western language research method by Japan. But Korean language study was gradually led to the direction towards the study of distinctive Korean characteristics and values. Korean language study by Japanese started to trace a word to its origin by comparison and contrast between Korean and Japanese. It was mostly about the aspect of the same origin between Korean and Japanese. By the way, historically, Korea and japan had exchanged their culture and traded actively. Korean textbooks had published since 17th century and its need was increased by various reasons. Korean study in Japan started with a simple vocabulary organization in order to publish textbooks for its learners. There were a lot of books published by many researchers, not only publishing textbooks but also identifying the etymological kinship between Korean and Japanese through comparison and contrast. Apart from a textbooks study, in the perspective of Korean language education there was research of Korean and Japanese language in the view of contrastive linguistics. The research on relation between Korean and Japanese in Japan had started with study of language origin and language families since Meiji era. In the early 1900’s, the majority was the conversational textbooks for the trading purpose between Korea and Japan. During the Sino-Japanese War(of 1894~5), there was mass publication of textbooks including the contents of Korean geographical information as a strategic location, and communication in the war. The publication of Korean textbooks for exam guide books and police administration was increased by Japanese political strategy for governance. Also the textbooks related to real life like agriculture and commerce were increased as long-term Japanese resident population was growing by Japanese invasion in 1910. As this study provided, the linguistic study on Korean was Focused on the research of contrast between Korean and Japanese, and cognate languages theory. The grammatical system based on this research results was reflected on Korean textbooks. Also the contents and the structures of Korean textbooks have been changed due to the learners’ purpose and needs, and the political situation as well.
