Issues on the Morpho-sysntactic Status and Classification of Nominal endings in the Korean Language and an alternative Analysis: from the perspective of Marker TheoryWoo Soon-Jo(Sungkyul University)This paper ciritically reviews some previous analyses, and summarizes issues in describing nominal endings in the korean language. This paper presents an evidence for the syntactc status of nominal endings, which have been neglected or at least vaguely represented in most analyses. The so-called dependent noun constructuions, contrary to the current conception, shows that the nominal ending(s) is(are) attachted, not to the immediately preceding lexical item, but the whole syntactic construction which is headed by the immediately preceding lexical item. This paper discusses the limitation of the prevailing notion of tree-like configuration and re-introduces an alternative notion of mobile-like configuration suggested by Woo(1994). The mobile-like configurationality of the Korean language doesn't accomodate the way to decide grammatical roles of constituents suggested by Chomsky(1965). The reason is that the one-to-one correspondence between the original positions and the landing sites are not guaranteed. This means that the realization of case marker of a constituent in question are not determined by the configurational position which it is presumed to take. This paper shows that there is a strong tendency in the alternation of nominal endings and the promotion principle (tentatively named and suggested by Woo:1994) correctly catches the generality.
