There are 248 old castle remains in Daegu city and Gyungsangbuk-do province of Korea. 73 remains among them are believed to have been made by Silla in the three kingdom period. And many other fortresses whose definite construction time we do not know may have been built at that period. Gyungju, Daegu and Sangju have more fortresses than other cities. Gyungju was the capital city of Silla, so many castles such as Wolsung, Myunghwalsung and Namsantosung were made around it from the early times. Daegu was a strategic point where the Naktong and the Gumho river meet. And Sangju was another strategic point in the western basin of the Naktong river. However there are few fortress remains in the mountainous area such as Youngyang and Chungsong. These areas are far from the frontier district of Silla and remote regions which are not easy for the enemy to approach. So far many fortress remains built at the three kingdom period have been explored and investigated. But a lot of remains needs to be surveyed more thoroughly. If necessary, some of them should be excavated to confirm their construction time.
