Almost scholars concede that ancient greek women actively engaged in religious activities in the polis. Religious activities of women went through a lot of changes in the family and polis after marriage. It is assumed that this kind of changes were involved in wedding ceremony. The fire(Hestia) was so important in ancient greek religion. The wedding procession was not only bringing the bride to groom’s house, but also moving the torch to groom’s house. The torch symbolized changing the family religion of the bride. Only bride’s mother could carry the torch in the wedding procession. And when the wedding procession arrived at the groom’s house, groom’s mother only could greet bride’s mother. It is interesting that only women could handle the fire in the wedding ceremony. Many scholars insist that only head of household presided the family religion. But when I examined this ceremonies, it seemed to me that women played important roles in the family religion. Women suffered religious changes after the wedding. Because the wedding ceremony was not only a ceremony for marriage, but also coming-of-age celebration to women. At proaulia, brides dedicated offerings to Artemis. It signified coming-of-age celebration. At epaulia, grooms gave a wedding-feast. Because a wedding-feast was an important post that brides were recognized their own citizenship. Recognizing women’s citizenship was the prerequisite for their religion activities. By developing of democracy and reinforcing of citizenship, the wedding ceremony was guaranteeing not only legitimate marriages, but also religious positions in the community.
