Hajeong ParkSamuel Richardson's Clarissa portrays two instances of filial disobedience: the Harlowe men's to the (dead) grandfather and Clarissa's to her family. When discussing the novel's portrayal of the conflict between claims of filial right and filial duty, however, Richardson himself tends to focus on Clarissa's case while being silent about the other. While tacitly approving male defiance portrayed in the novel, Richardson unconditionally advocates the idea of the primacy of filial obedience in his correspondences with young women. Drawing on this seeming contradiction regarding the issue, this essay attempts to connect Clarissa's portrayal of male defiance with Richardson's express idea of filial duty. By looking at the parallel between the two instances of filial defiance, it investigates how Richardson's idea of filial independence is presented in gendered terms: the son's usurpation of the father's authority is implicitly legitimized in the Harlowe family as necessary violence for the consolidation of patriarchy, while the daughter's right to autonomy is denied for the same reason. Since the daughter is regarded as a means to enlarge family fortune and influence, she is required to be dutiful, dependent, and loyal to their father's value system.
