This article intend to compare the tendencies of methods and epistemologies of ‘Local History’ which aims to study local and locality in contemporary France and England. At first, French Local History was continually mobiled or attracted by republican national history. It was proved by ‘Annales School’ which started by local history studies of Lucien Febvre and Marc Bloch before World war II. But its culminate period of dominated by French national and European history such as represented Emmanuel Le Ladurie and Fernand Braudel. In Contrast, England local history which started by William G. Hoskins and H. P. R. Finberg in middle of 20th century was developed and called Leicester School. In late 20th century, ‘Local History’ was related, especially in England, to the current of postmodernism in epistemology by its relativity of local scale and its process to criticize the national history. It resulted in to question the possibility of existence of local history as a discipline of history. Nowadays the study of ‘local history’ is in crisis one dimensional by threaten of computer technology and the other much absorptional attractive force of national history. But grope for the alternative is now attempting in search of the ‘history of memory’ in France or ‘community history’ in England which purpose to realize democratic society.
