This study scrutinized trends of history curricula in U.S.A., England and Japan and analysed their contents. Since late-1980s, there have been observable changes related to history curriculum in these countries. In U.S.A., National Standards for History was published in 1994, which suggested standards of historical thinking skills and historical comprehensions accomplished and of contents for American history and world history studied by students. In England, National Curriculum was developed in 1991, and a set of courses were designated for the core subject or the foundation subject. National Curriculum suggests attainment targets and study units for these courses. In Japan, a course of study was revised in 1989. Under the revised course of study, high school social studies was separated into two courses, one is civic course, the other is geography-history course and world history was chosen for a compulsory subject in the latter course. Under the course of study for middle school revised in 1998 and one for high school done in 1999. there has been a great decrease in amounts of contents studied by students, and the history centered on Japanese history and the world history relating to Japan were expanded. As the result of investigating history curricula of these three countries, we found such common trends as follows.
First, movements to make history subject a separate course and to strengthen the history education are outstanding trends.
Second, various courses and programs for learning social studies have been developed, that are focused on history and geography, or link history and geography.
Third, national standards on history course have been defined. Many study programs for accomplishing these standards build frameworks on the structure of the history discipline.
This study on the development and the revision of history curricula in these countries and their contents. I think, will make useful implications for our history education. And contents of these history curricula will be good concrete sources for revising our history curriculum.
