Andrew Davies’s 1995 BBC television adaptation of Pride and Prejudice enjoyed commercial success in its visualization of pastoral English landscape and cultural heritage as well as in its apparent fidelity to the novel and the Regency period. Davies’s script offers a radical interpretation and rewriting of the original novel with its additional Darcy scenes and its portrayal of Elizabeth’s physical liveliness. While emphasizing physicality and sexual attractiveness of Darcy and Elizabeth, the miniseries also dramatizes body and sexuality of comic, ridiculous characters such as silly Mrs. Bennet and sycophant Collins, only to condemn their vulgarity, absurdity, and even sexual repugnance, as implied in the novel. Paying attention to the seemingly respectable position of Collins as a rector with fortune and a connection, this essay discusses the ways in which the 1995 adaptation offers an interpretation of Collins by visualizing and augmenting what is only hinted in the novel—his hypocritical duality towards the landed patron and his rigid, narrow-minded view of women’s reputation. Through David Bamber’s physical features, the miniseries recreates a repulsive version of Collins who is a potentially dangerous authority figure, especially in his attitude toward the issues of Lydia disgrace and female education.
