After the independence Ukraine has tried to establish its own national and historical identity. There were already various views to analyze the Ukrainian history. Russian historians have asserted that Ukraine had no history of its own. For they regard the Ukrainian history as a part of the Great Russian history. Western historians asserted that there was not a nation-state in the ukrainian territory. As a result Ukrainian historians today are compelled to deal with the existing estimations of their national history. Basically they have maintained that the era of the Cossacks speaks for the autonomous identity of the Ukrainian history. It was the only time when Ukraine resisted powerful countries. But Russian and Western historians have different views about the era of the Cossacks. They disapprove of the originality of the Ukrainian cossacks. In opposition to the assertion of the Ukrainian historians, Russian historians maintain that Russia had a chance to annex Ukraine by the Treaty of Peryaslav in the era of the Cossacks, and Western historians deny its identity from the viewpoint of the nation-state. In conclusion, Ukraine has to devalue the legitimacy of the other views, in order to search for its own historical identity. This paper analyzes the era of the Cossacks objectively, reviewing various historical estimations.
