The purpose of this paper is to present an overview and a critical description of various reflections and ramifications of the Italian and international futurist movement in Croatian cultural and literary environment(s). Article will offer the introductory views on the early reception of futurism, on the elusive “futurism” of Janko Polić Kamov, on the futurist project of the Zadar circle, on the more abundant futurist events and traces from Rijeka/Fiume, and on the avant-garde movement of Zenitism. All historical events mentioned in this article were for decades either neglected in the mainstream of Croatian, Serbian and other relevant literary histories, or interpreted narrowly and in strong ideological terms. Such academic destiny of these chapters joining very different yet related literary and cultural scenes will indirectly show the impact of the nationalist conventions in understanding the transnational literary movements and provide explanations for the general neglect of the futurist movement in Croatian cultural and literary history.
