This paper investigates the　origin and the genealogical history of the discourse on culture in early modern China from the period of early translation in the 1820s to the period of transition in the 1900s. From the perspective of its conceptual history, ‘culture’ looks like a signifier which is full of so many multi-layered and even conflicting signifieds, but it also seems an empty signifier because it is too ambiguous and too contradictory to signify anything. ‘Culture’ has become the most powerful and omnicompetent discourse through the translation and the controversial struggles in China after the Hundred Days’ Reform movement. Also, it characterizes the culturalist feature of the discourse of ‘culture’ in China.
