This study aims at ascertaining the proper nature of photography by means of a reflection about the aesthetical dimension and the historical’s, peculiar to photography. The historical object refers to the universal mode of being of any temporal object left in this world and given to man’s consciousness, which consciousness is itself fundamentally historical. The aesthetical object, despite the fact that it is a trace, does not subordinate itself to the historical object’s economy of being, precisely so in that it is anhistorical and intemporal. The aesthetical object appears in the historical world and to man’s historical consciousness only as a historical object. In this appearing the being of the aesthetical object holds nevertheless and it is by the very trace which it leaves while appearing as a historical object that the aesthetical object is not but a mere sign or a historical document. The trace refers in that to the fundamental mode of being of the aesthetical object in an historical world.
