The Historical Performance in Korea: Perspectives for Its Present and FutureCho-Yeon BakHistorical performance in Korea seems to become a part of the main stream in Korean musical activity. The number of the historical performance groups, institutes, and festivals has dramatically increased since 2002. However, there is no one Korean source from which performers and students can find an overview of the significant issues or practical information to a particular instrument. Neither, a broad investigation for the activities of the Korean historical performance groups has been done. This article provides an overview of the historical performance activities in Korea, including musical performances, festivals, school education, and scholastic seminars. Based on the previous investigation, I could present analytical perspectives for the historical performance in Korea. The arguments for the last four decades between preferred historical performance and anti-historical performance in Western musical society should not need to be done in Korea. The value and contribution of historical performance lies in the effort to reconstitute the sound and the esthetic tastes of the particular period, and make performers reconsider the artistic responsibility. The study of historical concerns is important. However, the interpretation of performers is equally important. Feeling, interpretation, personality and individual taste in performance play a vital role in bringing the music to life. Therefore, not only reconstructing the physical sound of the early music, but also recreating each piece of the early music will make historical performance further enrich the Korean musical culture.
