Film is a historical agent. It can be used as a tool in historical research, such as a piece based on a historical or newsworthy event. Even fictional film can be used to retrieve valuable historical information. Many historians believe fictional films are not worthy as historical agents because they are produced primarily for creative or entertainment purposes. However, instead of simply labeling these films as creative works, we should look further and see that historical films can be reliable reenactments of historical events and valuable ways to learn the socioanthropological characteristics of the period, and that they are potentially very valuable historical artifacts. So what parts of history can films reliably aid in research? Our hypothesis is that fictional films not only show the social aspects but also the mentalities carried by the historical populations of the time covered. Conversely, history can also be a valuable tool in studying film. Without limiting ourselves to standard historical period pieces, our thesis is based on the relationships between history and film, group mentality and the individual artist. Nowadays it is difficult to limit oneself to a single field without branching into others. We must expand our horizons by connecting to other fields of study. Since Korea has no established history or tradition in film, it is especially urgent that we introduce here a methodology of studying film history. In this project we seek to find an appropriate method of researching ftlm history particular to our nation.
