The species of animals covered in the 6th and the 7th edition of the Korean elementary school science textbooks including 'Inquiry Life' and 'Elementary Science' were analyzed and compared. This study was conducted focusing on the animal area. The results found in the analysis of the species of animals appeared in the science textbooks are as follows :1. In comparison on the frequency of animals appeared in textbooks, 139 species and 520 frequency appeared in the 6th. 191 species and 405 frequency appeared in the 7th. 2. The frequency of animals appeared in the 1st grade in the 6th and the 6th grade in the 7th was higher than any other grades. 3. The species of animals appeared were classified into vertebrates and invertebrates. 42species and 260 frequency of vertebrates appeared in the 6th and 65 species and 221 frequency in the 7th. 38species and 260 frequency of invertebrates appeared in the 6th and 39 species and 184 frequency in the 7th. 4. 31 species of vertebrates and 36 species of invertebrates were appeared as a common species in both curricula. Frog and silver carp of vertebrates were dominant species in both curricula. And butterfly and drosophila of invertebrates were dominant species in both curricula. In conclusion, it was found that the various species of animals were appeared in the 7th textbooks than the 6th, and the units related animal in the 7th textbooks were evenly distributed by the grade than the 6th.
