The purpose of this study was to characterize changes in conceptual sophistication on the concept maps over the high school biology classes on excretory system, and ultimately to identify the most critical fact of concept maps on excretory system for meaningful learning. The subjects were 41 high school students. They drew the map their understandings during the classes regarding excretory system, and we analyzed the changes in conceptual sophistication. The major findings of this study were as follows.It revealed relatively less examples and cross-links than propositions and hierarchies at knowledge complexity of concept maps before classes, and was the same post concept maps. These mean that students make to receive excretory system as mere rote learning. We found that cross-links were very important roles for meaningful learning. If a fixed form of concept map on excretory system is presented in biology classes, it will be useful for meaningful learning.
