Hyun-Ju LeeThe Owl and the Nightingale, which is assumed to have been written by Nicholas of Guilford in the 13th century, is regarded as the only pre-Chaucerian poem to rival Chaucer's subtlety and wit. It is also appraised as the first debate literature written in Southern English octosyllabic couplet among the literary trends which value the alliterative poems written in Latin and Anglo-Norman. Because of these valuable characteristics The Owl and the Nightingale has been studied a lot by Western medievalists. But this poem has been overshadowed by Chaucer and Gawain-poets, and has been little studied by Korean medievalists. It is generally accepted that the debate literature has two kinds of narrators: the narrator who finds his self-identity through debating with the theological or philosophical mentor and the narrator who just reports two protagonists' debate without any personal comment. At first, the narrator in The Owl and the Nightingale follows the second type. But he is different in that he expresses his own opinion about each debater and sometimes he even leads the atmosphere of the poem. Nevertheless, he does not judge who the winner is at the end. He just sends in the judgement to wise Nicholas of Guilford. The end of this poem is open because there is no obvious judgement. And this kind of ending is regarded as a very revolutionary element and an expression of individualism in the Middle Ages, a period dominated by Christianity. The purpose of this thesis is to find the true meaning of 'open ending' in this poem by focusing on the narrator's changing attitude while the debate is developing.
