The study starts from the basic questions on debate education in University. What do we need to teach them? How do we deliver them? During last fifteen years, there have been lots of progress on education related debate in Korean society. Despite academic accumulations on this subject, we easily can find that discrepancy and discord in the concept and jargon on debate among researchers. This study will review the papers related to debate pedagogy which was published last fifteen years. Through this review process, the inherent problems will be elicited in debate courses in University education. Finally, the new direction and methods concerning debate courses will be suggested.
One hundred and thirty papers related to debate education were classified as followings; debate history, debate concept, the current status and prospect of debate(speech) education, debate capacity, debate course design, debate course case study, debate pedagogy, debate type, debate evaluation, debate tournaments, reading and debate. Above mentioned papers are diverse in terms of academic institute and they are come from 40 institutes as well as various academic disciplines.
There are conflicting opinions toward the objective of debate education which each researcher suggested. This confusion might be due to the conceptual difference on the idea on debate. The word, ‘토론’ in korean is being used as a simple translation of debate. However, it compasses the broad meaning of discussion. There might be the intrinsic characteristics in Korean debate culture; there is a prevailing anti attitude competitive debate and pro attitude cooperative discussion attitude on the other hand. By analysing the various education objectives, we could find the two different tendencies. When 토론 was used in the narrow meaning of debate, the objective tends to the improvement of debate ability. On the other hand, the democracy citizen nurturing is the common objective in the case of the education objective used as the broad meaning of 토론.
The study suggests some practical solutions. There is a need on unifying of concept and word in debate education. We need to separate objectves and goals, debate and debate education. And we need to set different objective on each different course. Up to now, diverse agencies contributed in developing debate education. There is a strong need of association and institute encompassing debate education and research. Promoting the umbrella agency will contrive to developing the debate education.
