This paper tries to understand the Vietnamese local people's reaction against the French colonial rule during the first half of the 20th century in the rural society of Tonkin. Based upon the primary sources of the Vietnam National Archives and local field research, upon the statistic and static analysis and upon the interdisciplinary approach including economic, political and cultural points of views, it examines how successfully the French colonial government could infiltrate into village landownership and in which way the indigenous proprietors including female landowners had responded to maximize material profits and spiritual values. Different from the rural society of Cochin-china and Annam, the villages of Tonkin could have maintained the main characteristics in traditional land ownership, while the French colonial government had ruled it in indirect and cautious measures for political stability. However, since the French authorities had escalated its colonial exploitation in the agricultural sector in 1920's, the female landowners not only had spared no effort to protect their inheritance rights of land, but also had to struggle both with the French colonists and with village ruling class that had made efforts to preserve the tradition of self-governance in the village.
