This thesis is to propose a theoretical issue regarding the identity of the Korean village, comparing with Japanese village in the colonial period. Japanese rural society had a powerful community, autonomy village, from feudal era to modern times. Although Japanese economy is so different from Korean one, the colonial policy of Japanese imperialism had narrowed the difference of village structure between two countries. However, the penetration of discipline power in colonial period led to a different pattern between two countries: voluntary form from the bottom in Japan, compulsory one from the top in Korea. Especially, the cultural contact with rapid modernization in colonial village brought about embarrassment and rejection to Korean peasants. It iss so-called ‘delayed adaptation’ in response to rapid change. It gave rise to the dualism in cultural area, as well as in the space. The rural area in colonial Korea was so-called a ‘part society with part culture’ that Robert Redfield and Eric Wolf said. We think it is because of the ethos that Korean peasants essentially have in the context of mentality. Invention of tradition in colonial peasant society is a result confronted with the social mobilization of colonial policy. According to Eric Hobsbawm, an invented tradition reflects a requirement of social stability and legitimacy in the transition period. Korean peasants found out traditional elements as a counterpart of social stabilization. But Japanese did not need to find out an invented tradition specially in rural community. It means Korean society have a dualism divided between city and rural area in the context of culture and mentality, as well as space. Accordingly Korean rural society in the colonial period reflected the identity of Korean, Koreaness. The culture of peasants society had a constancy as a representative of Korean tradition and folklore, coexisting with the colonial modernity.
