The aim of this paper is to examine lexicographic characteristics and the purpose of Pyojun-Gugeo-Daesajeon, which was developed under the support of the nation and is widely accepted as the only standard dictionary in Korean. In chapter 2, I briefly survey the aims of compilation of the dictionary and analyze lexicographic characteristics in three aspects. Although the dictionary was compiled as a national project, the aim of compiling the dictionary is not clear. It is difficult to find explicit explanation or report about the aims and scopes of the dictionary. This must have something to do with the facts that the lexicographic characteristics of the dictionary is much different from what is expected. From a macro-structural point of view, the dictionary is not suitable for normative use as it has been evaluated by academics nor is a comprehensive language dictionary. And it is difficult to be considered as a dictionary compiled on historical principles as most comprehensive language dictionaries do. In chapter 3, I analyze about 40 entries which are the lexical items about dictionary and linguistics norms in Korea. To summarize, there are too many errors in the descriptions for those entries and head words, it reflects the incompleteness and haste of dictionary-making process. In chapter 4, I make some suggestions about the corrections of the dictionary.
