This essay tries to elucidate an organic world view which is implied in the symbolic system of hexagram-lines of I Ching in the viewpoint of the cultural ecology for the purpose of the philosophical reflection and establishment of foundation for improvement of problem of civilizational crisis to which contemporary society faces up. What this essay is interested is that the hexagram-lines and judgment of them in the I Ching is composed of the system in which they are connected in the intimate relationship with each other. The valuation which is relies on worth about various phenomena of nature and human society is contained in these system of hexagram-lines and judgment of them. These valuative judgment represents symbolically stability or unstability of the relation which is lied in the relation between the circumstance of the special hexagram-line and its neighbor or corresponding hexagram-line, order or dis order, constancy or inconstancy etc. The I Ching offers the standard of human action by which man can reaches ain the harmony and equilibrium through the representation of these standard. The possibility that the I Ching can be interpreted in the viewpoint of the cultural ecology just lies in this. Then, cultural ecology takes the opinion that cultural element or characteristic related with a pattern of human life has intimate relation with outer environment and these culture of man is a necessary result being deducted from its correlative contact with outer environment. What is important in this cultural ecology is that the culture establishes from the process through which regulative operation is considered so that man may have constancy and stability coping with outer environment. Seen as this, the composition of culture as the regulative operation of cultural ecology is just in accordance with the establishment of standard of value for the purpose of the orientation of the Mean in the I Ching. In conclusion, this essay has an important significance in that it inquires into the new theoretical reference being derived from the I Ching and cultural ecology, by which the crisis of an ecosystem and socio-cultural conflict and confusion is cured in the total connection.

본 논문은 현대사회가 직면하고 있는 문명의 위기 문제를 개선하기 위한 철학적 반성과 토대를 정립하기 위하여 「주역」의 괘효사와 그 상징체계에 내포되어 있는 유기체적 세계관을 文化生態學의 관점에서 조명하고자 하였다. 본 논문에서는 특히 「주역」의 괘효와 괘효사 체계가 상호간에 유기체적인 상호연관성을 맺고 있다는 점에 초점을 두었다. 괘효와 괘효사 체계는 특정한 괘효의 상황이 주변 효들과 맺고 있는 관계의 안정성 혹은 불안전성, 그리고 질서와 혼란, 항상성 등을 상징적으로 드러내고 있다. 특히 괘효사에서 전반부는 자연과 인사의 사실적인 기술을 통하여 사태 자체의 환경을 기술하여 이것에 대하여 그 안정성, 질서와 교란 여부 등을 기준으로 吉凶의 가치평가를 행하고 있다. 「주역」의 이러한 특성은 괘효사가 상징하는 것과 유사한 상황에 처해 있는 사람들에게 그런 안정 또는 불안정, 질서 또는 혼란 상황에 적절하게 대응하여 그 상황과 균형 및 조화를 이룰 수 있는 기준을 제시해 주는 의미를 가진다. 「주역」이 문화생태학적 관점에서 해석될 수 있는 가능성은 바로 이 점에 있다. 문화생태학은 인간의 삶의 양식과 관련한 문화적 요소 또는 특성이 외적 환경과 밀접한 연관성을 가지고 있으며, 인간의 이러한 문화는 외부 환경과의 상호관계로부터 연역되어 나온 필연적인 결과라는 입장을 가지고 있다. 곧 어떤 특수한 사회에서 통용되는 문화적 내용은 바로 그 지역의 외부 자연환경에 적응한 결과라는 것이다. 문화생태학에서 중요시하는 것은 인간이 외부환경에 대응하여 항상성과 안정성을 가지도록 조절적 기능을 생각하는 과정에서 문화가 형성된다는 것이다. 이렇게 볼 때 문화생태학의 조절적 기능으로서의 문화형성은 바로 「주역」에서 中道를 지향하여 외적 상황에 적절하게 대응하고자 가치판단의 기준을 구성하는 것과 유사성을 가진다. 요컨대, 문화생태학과 「주역」은 인간을 둘러싼 환경에 대한 사실적 기술과 이에 대한 적응을 통하여 인간이 자연과 조화와 균형을 이루고자 하는 목표를 가진다는 점에서 그 일관된 의미를 가진다. 따라서 「주역」과 문화생태학은 현대의 생태윤리학의 새로운 정립을 위해서도 매우 중요한 시사점을 던져 줄 수 있다고 하겠다.
