"Possessive Adjectives" in Russian: A case study of Function Adapter theory Choi, Sung-ho This study aims to clarify the Part-of-Speech membership and the syntactic function of what has been called "possessive adjectives(PA)" in Russian with respect to the theory of Function Adapter(=FA). After discussing several characteristic features of PA on various levels and critically reviewing the previous of these features, the study introduces the concept of FA. The inflectional status of FA as a new inflectional category is motivated by the fact that while there is a prototypical (unmarked) relation between parts-of-speech and syntactic functions, the relation may be destroyed, in which case FA remedies the deviated relation. It is argued in this paper that PA is a noun that is markedly used like a determiner and that the suffix /in/ is a FA, which adapts the noun to the syntactic function of a determiner. This understanding explains why the base nominal underlying PA must be referentially definite: the determiner assigns definiteness (definite identity) to the entity referred to by the noun.
