Purpose: Health communication is an important component of patient-centered care to meet successful health outcomes. However, there is limited study about patients' communication style or competence. This study was to explore the relationship among health communication style, competence and satisfaction of hospital outpatients, and to identify relating factors. Methods:A descriptive survey was conducted with convenient sample of 109 outpatients in a general hospital. Reliable and valid self-questionnaires were used and SPSS win 20.0 software was used for data analysis. Results:The mean age was 46.33 (SD=13.90) years, and more than 52% had visited hospital for less than 3 years. 39.4% of patients' health communication style was 'functional' while others were 'non-functional'. The level of health communication competence and the health communication satisfaction were moderate. Furthermore, functional communication style group was higher on health communication competence than non-functional (t=3.17, p<.01), and health communication competnece was also significantly correlated with health communication satisfaction (r=.314, p<.01). The health communication competence (β=.304, p<.01), and doctor's consulting time (β=.184, p<.05) were influencing factors of the communication satisfaction (R2=.131, p<.01). Conclusion:This study result indicates that health professionals should consider patients' health communication style and competence during health consulting to improve their satisfaction and health outcomes.
