A music analysis of this paper is based on music history and music theory in the 19th and early 20th century. Brahms’s clarinet chamber music is written in his late period, even after his retirement from official activities. Brahms’s late chamber music with clarinet appears more concise than before, but unique harmonic features are found. So in order to analyze the harmonic and metrical structure of the pieces of Johannes Brahms, I tried to observe the music, on the one hand, from the linear aspect of bass progression, especially elliptical ‘fundamental bass motion’(Fundamentalbassschritt) of Simon Sechter, a Viennese music theorist, and, on the other hand, from the viewpoint of kinetic energy flow from the notion of terms of the natural sciences, which developed markedly at that time and affected also the field of music theory. The method applies to clarinet quintet of Reger who was influenced by Brahms in his composition style. This Analysis suggests that aspects of motion in melodic harmonic progression by using the structure of circle of fifths at various levels give a dynamic characteristic to Brahms’s clarinet quintet op. 115 and Reger’s clarinet quintet op. 146.
