This study has examined how the meanings of Yun Dong-ju’s poems can be interpreted and also discussed their applicability to heritage language education in the perspective of transnationalism. Transnationalism has its validity in that it is beyond the border of modern nationalism taking a single nation or race as the standard and captures complex aspects of the agents reorganized between them. Seeking the image of new society triggered by the altered concept of agents leads us to reconceptualizing heritage language education in a more active sense. Seen in the perspective of transnationalism, the meaning of one’s ‘hometown’ repeatedly embodied in Yun Dong-ju’s poems can be differentiated as ‘the space of empathy grounded on universal sentiments’ and ‘the space of pursuit grounded on boundary imagination’, and this recognition of distinction allows us to understand the world of Yun Dong-ju’s poetry more multilaterally. It is expected that the discussion above will contribute to extending the range of using the subject matters of Yun Dong-ju’s poems in heritage language education and also seeking a new society based on forming a bond of sympathy with the learners of heritage language as well as diversity.
