The Achievement of “Odour of Chrysanthemums” and the Theme of OthernessYoung-Phil Yoon (Kyeongki U)Acclaimed as a pioneering realistic short fiction, D. H. Lawrence’s “Odour of Chrysanthemums” has also drawn much critical attention to its revisions, especially of its endings, and to the author’s artistic, spiritual growth found in them. Going through the summer and autumn revisions in 1914, this story developed into the first lucid expression of Lawrencian vision of otherness. This paper tries to examine how this vision of otherness unfolds in it and define its significance in the context of other related works.With its vivid realistic scenes rich with symbolic images, this story depicts a woman’s sudden awakening to the otherness of being. Elizabeth Bates, a bitterly disillusioned woman of higher upbringing and education than that of her miner husband, feels deep anger at his late home-coming, which gradually gives way to her increasing fear of his accident. Confronted by his sudden death, however, she has an epiphanic moment in which she realizes the painful truth of his ‘other’ being. In a peculiar Lawrencian style of repetitive, organic rhythm, the final scene exquisitely renders her intensive psychic movements from initial ego-centric attempt to appropriate his dead body, through acute realization of the ultimate separateness of being, to the remorseful recognition of her faults and sympathetic understanding of her husband. Taking a short glimpse of Lawrence’s other works, the concluding part of this paper thinks over the achievement of “Odour of Chrysanthemums”, pointing out that his growing sense of otherness overlaps with his impartial understanding and impersonal representation of his own biographical materials, especially those related with his own parents of whom it took a considerable time for him to get a balanced view.
