Otherness and Human Being: D. H. Lawrence and Emmanuel LevinasYoung-Phil Yoon (Kyonggi U)Comparing Lawrence with Levinas, this paper aims to show the relevance of Lawrence’s thinking to the contemporary philosophical issues of otherness and subjectivity. Both Lawrence and Levinas share the idea that Western civilization has been dominated by the identitarian/totalitarian tendency that neutralizes the uniqueness or otherness of each existent, and that this is inseparable from the sovereign positioning of self-present consciousness, conscious ego as subjectivity itself. Conspicuously different, however, are their ways to found subjectivity and human relationship on the idea of otherness. Inquiring into the meaning of ‘being’, Lawrence persistently invokes the deeper level of being prior to consciousness and envisions a social relationship according to the difference of ‘power’. On the other hand, Levinas whose ethics is an attempt to go beyond ontology defines subjectivity as hospitality to the Other, absolute responsibility for the Other, drawing on the ideal of ‘love’ as charity. In his view, Lawrence might be suspected of not shaking off the egoistical sovereignty or ontological legacy. In turn, Lawrence provides a good vantage point from which to see the risky traits of idealism and Europo-anthropocentrism still lurking in Levinas’s postmodern ethics.
