The purposes of this study were to examine the abilities of fundamental motor performance in children with mild mental retardation(MMR) and to investigate the influence of age, gender, and parental physical activity on their fundamental motor performance. The participants were 112 children from 9 to 12 years of age with MMR (boy=61, girl=51) from 5 special schools serving elementary schoolers with MR and their parents. The Test of Gross Motor Development, Second Edition (TGMD-2; Ulrich, 2000) and the Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire (GLTEQ; Godin & Shephard, 1985) were used to assess fundamental motor performance abilities of participant children and physical activity of participant parents. Descriptive statistics and three way ANOVAs were used for data analyses. The findings of this study were drawn as follows: First, children with MMR lag behind their peers without disabilities in the fundamental motor performance. Second, there were the main effect of gender and parental physical activity on fundamental motor performance in children with MMR; however, there was no statistically significant effect of age on fundamental motor performance in children with MMR. Third, there was no interaction effect of age, gender, and parental physical activity on fundamental motor performance in children with MMR.
