Disruption of families through incarceration of parents has become an increasingly serious problem over the past decade in the United States. The prison population has grown dramatically, and the increase of women prisoners in the population is particularly striking. In the United States, more than 6 million children have parents under correctional supervision (either in prison, jail, on probation or parole), with 2 million of these children having parents in prison Federal law and many state statutes addressing termination of parental rights specifically provide that a parent’s incarceration or felony conviction may be grounds for termination of parental rights. Actually, most statutes that include incarceration as possible grounds for termination of parental rights are tied to the length of the parent’s sentence States permitting termination of parental rights based on the length of the parent’s prison sentence include In this paper, I will discuss termination of parentalrights for incarcerated women. First of all, I research how the federal and state laws have affected incarcerated mothers and the termination of their parental rights, and then I examine problems which arise from termination of incarcerated women's parental rights. Finally, I suggest improvements of the law related to the parental rights of incarcerated woman.
