At both global and national level, the rising concerns and strong emphasis on the GHG(greenhouse gas) regulations, which is based on market-based flexible mechanisms(ET, CDM and JI), is pressuring corporations to take a stronger interest in this issue. This study aims to examine the carbon strategy of EU(under non-voluntary emission trading scheme) and Japanese Corporations(under voluntary emission trading scheme) that have already faced and handled GHG emissions reduction. First, Both EU and Japanese corporations have strategic options like internal emissions reduction, ET(Emission Trading) and CDM(Clean Development Mechanism)/JI(Joint Implementation). Second, rather than internal emissions reduction, the strategy of using the carbon market has been promoted for most of large industrial emitters. Third, many corporations have now entered the carbon market for business opportunities, CSR activities, and marketing strategies. Korean corporations need to set up systematic carbon strategies such as understanding the influence of GHG regulations, developing an emissions inventory, establishing strategic positions consisting of internal emissions reduction and market usage, and investigating new business opportunities to handle carbon market effectively.
