A Quranic study is the starting point and also the finishing one in Arabic linguistics. The Arabic grammar has developed as the prescriptive grammar because the Quranic language became the norm of the Arabic language. But in the Quran, there are the some strange phenomenon that non Arabs can not understand. The one of the phenomena is ’Iltifāt(literal meaning is ‘conversion’, or ‘turning one’s face to..’). This term came to be used for turning aside in speech to talk about something before continuing with the original subject. The types of ’Iltifāt in Quran are change in person, number, addressee, the tense of the verb, case marker and using noun in place of pronoun. Non muslim scholars as Nöldeke and P. Newton have considered ’Iltifāt as solecisms or simply to ignore it. They regarded it as the grammatical errors and evidence for the incompleteness of Quran. Muslim specialists in Arabic rhetoric, on the other hand, refer to this phenomenon as the unique rhetoric device in Arabic language. They have prized it as ‘shajāa`ah al-`arabiyyah’(the audacity of Arabic). In this article, I research the definition of ’Iltifāt and it’s type and style through the various interpretations and applications. Especially I concentrate the change in person between 1st, 2nd and 3rd person, which is the most common ’Iltifāt in Quran. I expect to see whether ’Iltifāt is grammatical errors as the orientalists’ insisit or it is the rhetoric device in Arabic language as the mulsim scholars.
