Iltifāt(literally 'conversion' or 'turning one's face to') is a type of the specific Arabic expression. Muslim specialists in Arabic rhetoric defined it as the change of speech from one mode(person, tense, case, number etc.) to another for the sake of freshness and variety for the listener to renew his interest and to keep his mind from boredom and frustration through having the one mode continuously at his ear. Some of them referred the Iltifāt as the audacity of Arabic(shajā`ah al-`arabiyyah) or dynamics of the Quranic discourse. Apparently Iltifāt being seen the deviation from the orthodox Arabic grammatical rule, it can be understood as the grammatical error and non-logical device by the some orientalists. But the communication function being the most important factor in the Arabic rhetoric, Iltifāt be understood as the one of the Arabic rhetoric devices by the most muslim scholars. In this article, I will try to find the conditions of Iltifāt and its constraints. To find the common conditions and its constraints when Iltifāt happens can be the useful method to prove the Iltifāt as the rhetoric device in the Arabic language and its logical appropriateness. I will use the change of viewpoint and person pronoun in Quran to analysis Iltifāt because both are the reasonable tools to prove Iltifāt as the rhetoric device and has been considered as the typical Iltifāt in Quran.
