This paper attempts to explore some aspects of serial verbs in contemporary Turkish. First it is argued that so-called /-(y)ArAk/ and /-(y)İp/ constructions belong to the subcategories of Turkish serial verbs, and their semantic differences are in the focus between V1 and V2. That is, V2 has a focus in /-(y)İp/ construction, and V1 has a focus in /-(y)ArAk/ construction. The focus positions of the constructions can be represented as a set-theoretical relation that the denotation of V1 + V2 is X ∩ Y = X in /-(y)ArAk/ construction, and the denotation of V1 + V2 is X ∩ Y = Y in /-(y)İp/ construction. The criterion for distinguishing the compound verb and serial verb is what is the result of the intersection of two verbs. That is, if the intersection of two verbs is a null set then the construction is a compound verb, and if the intersection is a non-null set then it is a serial verb even if it appears in /-(y)İp/ construction.
